Welcome to Yakutat School District: Home of the Eagles!
As one can observe from the lead in photos, Yakutat is a beautiful place to live and an especially great location for a school. Nestled in the Tongass National Forest, surrounded on three sides by mountains, and facing Yakutat Bay, YSD has a rich collection of trails, streams, glaciers, flora and fauna; in effect, a natural classroom. The gallery of photos below provides a glimpse of our students enjoying this pristine natural setting.
We are very proud of our veteran teaching staff. Many districts suffer high teacher turnover rates. This is not the case in Yakutat. The most frequent reason for leaving the faculty is retirement and many retirees never leave. Yakutat also features small class sizes that facilitate whole and small group activities, yet allows for intense one-to-one instruction as appropriate. For parents who choose to homeschool their children, Yakutat LEAD School is a solution. In fact in a few cases families choose a combination of both traditional and homeschooling.
Welcome to Yakutat, a friendly community with a rich cultural heritage, great kids, abundant recreational opportunities surrounded by a nurturing educational environment.
